Being prepared for an incident involving an active shooter is extremely valuable for anyone, as it can occur at any TIME or PLACE. News recently has shown various incidents involving active shooter incidents, including the Texas A&M shooting, as this post is being written.
What is an Active Shooter?
An Active Shooter is an individual actively engaged in killing or attempting to kill people in a confined and populated area; in most cases, active shooters use firearms(s) and there is no pattern or method to their selection of victims. Active shooter situations are unpredictable and evolve quickly. Typically, the immediate deployment of law enforcement is required to stop the shooting and mitigate harm to victims. Because active shooter situations are often over within 10 to 15 minutes, before law enforcement arrives on the scene, individuals must be prepared both mentally and physically to deal with an active shooter situation.
What to do during an Active Shooter?
In any event such as this, immediately dial 911 and provide local law enforcement with as much information as possible. Information to be relayed to local law enforcement should be; location and number of shooters, physical description of shooters, number and type of weapons held by the shooters and the number of potential victims at the location. Many may become confused during an event like this, as the stress endured may make someone shut down mentally.
A few things to consider during an Active Shooter are:
- Have an escape route in plan
- Leave your belongings behind
- Keep your hands visible
- Hide in an area outside of the shooter’s view
- Block entry to your hiding place
- Silence your mobile devices
As a Last Resort:
- Attempt to incapacitate the shooter
- Act with physical aggression
